About Regional Squads and Training

Regional Race Squad

The Regional Race squad is designed to 'hothouse' regional sailors who want to try for the Welsh National Squad. Training will be hosted at Pembrokeshire Activity Centre.

West Open Training

Working at a level below the Regional Race Squad, this group is focused on the following areas:

  1. To work with younger, less experienced children who are not quite ready for the Regional Race Squad. Stage 1 and 2 sailors who feel brave enough to sail through the winter need to apply for Open Training and indicate on the form that they are first timers. A programme will be worked out for these sailors dependant on numbers applying.
  2. Helping older children improve their ability and technique to raise the standard of club and open meeting racing across the Region.
  3. Enabling sailors of all ages to develop coaching skills in order to support club training.

Regional Volunteer Team

Regional Racing and Open Training Squads cannot exist without a lot of input from volunteers. The skills that volunteers bring are diverse, not all require a great depth of sailing experience and vacancies exist for: (not an exhaustive list)

  • Class coaches
  • Appointed people responsible for Child Welfare
  • Beachmasters
  • Shorebased Parents
  • Regalia / Squad clothing coordinator
  • Sports Science Physiology and Fitness
  • Sports Science Psychology
